Identifying the IP in an FPGA

Carol Marsh, Tom Kean, David McLaren

Currently there is no method available to detect which designs are in an FPGA. If a designer suspects that their IP is being misused, it is very difficult to prove. Several methods have been proposed to protect the designs, for example, encrypting the bitstream. This presentation introduces a technology which aims to detect misuse rather than prevent it, by adding a digital tag to the IP. The tag uses temperature as the communications channel.
